What are the “status codes” for a domain name?

Domains and associated domain status codes exist in a one-to-many relationship. That is, a domain name may have more than one associated status at any given time. The VeriSign Registry can change the status of all registered domain names, while Registrars can only change the status of domain names that they have registered. As of June 25, 2005 the VeriSign Registry provides the following EPP status codes

OK

This is the default status of a domain name at registration time. The Shared Registration System sets the domain name to this status. A domain name in this status can be modified by the Registrar and will appear in the appropriate zone file if there are name servers associated with the domain name.

ClientHold

The Registrar of the domain name sets the domain name to this status. Domain names placed under ClientHold are NOT included in the zone files. Domains under ClientHold status can be updated, deleted, transferred, and Renewed.

ClientUpdateProhibited

The Registrar of the domain name sets the domain name to this status. If a domain is under ClientUpdateProhibited status, a Registrar cannot modify the name servers linked to the domain name, the auth info code cannot be updated, the domain cannot be synced, and the Registrar cannot modify the status of the domain without first removing ClientUpdateProhibited. When a domain is on ClientUpdateProhibited it is included in the zone files, it can be transferred, deleted, and can also be renewed.

ClientTransferProhibited

The Registrar of the domain name sets the domain name to this status.  If a domain is under ClientTransferProhibited status, the domain name cannot be transferred from one Registrar to another. When a domain name is on ClientTransferProhibited status it can be updated, deleted, renewed, and is included in the zone.

ClientDeleteProhibited

The Registrar of the domain name sets the domain name to this status.  If a domain is under ClientDeleteProhbited, the domain name cannot be deleted.  When a domain name is on ClientDeleteProhibited status it can be updated, transferred, renewed, and is included in the zone.

ClientRenewProhibited

The Registrar of the domain sets the domain name to this status. If a domain is under ClientRenewProhibited status, the domain name cannot be explicitly renewed.  When a domain name is on ClientRenewProhibited status it can be updated, transferred, deleted, and is included in the zone.

ServerHold

The VeriSign Registry sets the domain name to this status. When the domain name is in this status is not included in the zone file.

ServerUpdateProhibited

The VeriSign Registry sets the domain to this status. If a domain is under ServerUpdateProhibited status,  the name servers linked to the domain name cannot be updated, the auth info code cannot be updated, the domain cannot be synched, and the Registry/Registrar cannot modify the status of the domain without first removing ServerUpdateProhibited. When a domain is on ServerUpdateProhibited it is included in the zone files. Domains under ServerHold status can be updated, deleted, transferred, and Renewed.

ServerTransferProhibited

The VeriSign Registry sets the domain to this status. If a domain is under ServerTransferProhibited status, the domain name cannot be transferred from one Registrar to another. When a domain name is on ServerTransferProhibited status it can be updated, deleted, renewed, and is included in the zone.

ServerDeleteProhibited

The VeriSign Registry sets the domain name to this status.  If a domain is under ServerDeleteProhbited, the domain name cannot be deleted. When a domain name is on ClientDeleteProhibited status it can be updated, transferred, renewed, and is included in the zone.

ServerRenewProhibited

The VeriSign Registry sets the domain name to this status. If a domain is under ServerRenewProhibited status, the domain name cannot be explicitly renewed.  When a domain name is on ServerRenewProhibited status it can be updated, transferred, deleted, and is included in the zone

RedemptionPeriod

The Shared Registration System sets the domain name to this status if the domain name is deleted after the 5 day Create Grace Period. The domain name will remain in this status for 30 calendar days unless the Restore command is issued by the current Registrar. All EPP commands other than Restore will fail if the domain is in this status. Domains in this status will not be published to the zone file.

PendingRestore

The Shared Registration System sets the domain name to this status if a Restore command has been issued on a domain name in RedemptionPeriod Status. The PendingRestore period lasts 7 calendar days. During this 7 calendar day window, the Registrar must submit a Restore Report to the VeriSign Registry through the Registrar Tool or via the EPP Protocol. If VeriSign Registry receives the Restore Report during the 7 day PendingRestore Period, the domain name will be placed in Active status immediately. If the Restore Report is not submitted within the 7 day PendingRestore Period, the domain is placed back on RedemptionPeriod status and the 30 day RedemptionPeriod is reset and starts from Day 0. Domains in this status are published to the zone file.

PendingDelete

The Shared Registration System sets the domain name to this status if the domain name remains in Redemption Period status for the full 30 calendar day period. The PendingDelete status lasts 5 days and domains in this status will not be published to the zone file. Once a domain name enters the PendingDelete Period it cannot be Restored.
