Need story ideas? Here are 6 to pitch in March

green shamrockThis time of year, with no major holidays around the corner, you might be hurting for story ideas.

Here are several for the month of March, suggested by Shawne Duperon, a TV producer, and me, when we hosted a teleseminar on 116 WOW! Story Ideas from January through June.

Remember that if you’re pitching TV, it helps if you have compelling visuals. Think: People. Color. Motion.

  • St.  Patrick’s Day offers lots of opportunities for coverage.  Invite TV cameras into your company for unusual St. Patty’s Day celebrations. If you’re creating a product that’s green today, let the media know.

  • March is American Red Cross Month, an opportune time for companies and non-profits to encourage their employees and others to give blood.  Issue a challenge to your employees on how many gallons of blood people in various departments can give, and invite the TV cameras to cover it. If you’re in a local service club, challenge another service club.

  • March 7-11 is Newspapers in Education Week.  If your school uses newspapers in the classroom, let your local newspaper know.  You might be part of a story.

  • March is a big time for special end-of-winter sales.  Invite the media into your store for a story about how retailers prepare for sales.

  • Stories about plastic surgery are big this month as people start thinking about what they’ll look like in a bathing suit.  TV reporters love before-and-after stories.  Invite a reporter to follow you through surgery.

Before you pitch, read what I wrote last week on 6 ways to romance journalists with your pitch.

What about you? What stories are you planning to pitch during March? Or which have you pitched that have resulted in publicity?

Joan, you outdid yourself with the copyblogger.com referral — a trove of articles on writing and promotion that I immediately bookmarked for long reading sessions later on. Congratulations on a content rich product.

      Glad to help, John.

Copyblogger is one of my very favorite sites to learn right writing for the web.
