Your favorite LinkedIn group for marketing, PR, publicity?

If you’re curious about whether email pitches are effective, you’ll want to know about the interesting discussion under way in the PRWise group on LinkedIn.

“Given journalists’ overcrowded inboxes, does e-mail pitching work anymore? What are your secrets to achieving success with email pitches?” asks Stephen Spenser, principal of Praxis Communication and formerly with the Associated Press.

I’ve been following it the last several days, and lots of PR people have been weighing in with their opinions.

The question resulted in more than 45 comments, many from PR people who worked as journalists. Most agreed that finding out exactly what journalists want, and building a relationship with them, is most important. Several offered step-by-step directions on what they do to achieve media hits.

Groups like this one are invaluable because you can ask a question and get dozens of comments within just a few days.

That got me thinking. What groups on LinkedIn do you recommend for Publicity Hounds who want help with any phase of marketing, PR, publicity and social media? There are hundreds. But joining too many groups can be like drinking from a firehose.

What groups have you created or joined that you couldn’t live without, and why? Any group rules or etiquette we should know about before we join?

Good question Joan, there’s a lot of LinkedIn groups to sort through. Specifically for PR, lately I’ve been participating in PR Professionals and Network of PR Professionals.

    Joan —

LinkedIn is beginning to experiment with groups whose discussions are open to everyone, not just group members. I wrote a blog post about such a group — Social Media Marketing — and participating in such a group can give you much more exposure than participating in the members-only LinkedIn groups.

Here’s the link to that blog post: http://budurl.com/LIopen
