This Week in the Hound House:
All over town, they’re buzzing about the deer that dropped triplets. The little family has been spotted everywhere. I saw them taking their good old time crossing the busy main street in the middle of the afternoon. Just stay out of my backyard, OK?
1. Foxy Ladies
If you’re a woman who has booked an in-studio interview on Fox News or its financial counterpart, Fox Business, prepare yourself for lots of eye shadow, lip gloss and maybe even false eyelashes, courtesy of the network’s makeup artist.
Here’s an excerpt from a fascinating story in the Atlantic titled “Foxy Ladies–Why one network applies so much makeup.” It gives you a glimpse of what to expect if Fox says yes to your pitch:
“For a contingent of female bloggers, ideologues, advocates, pundits, and writers, a Fox gig brings with it an unexpected dilemma. There you are, a renowned expert on nuclear proliferation/immigration policy/the Middle East, obliged to regard yourself in the mirror and ask: Will I really go on national television looking like a cross between Captain Jack Sparrow and a waitress from Hooters?”
It isn’t just Fox, the articles says. Other channels are beginning to embrace the Fox approach to cosmetics. TV publicity is as much about entertainment as it is about journalism–sometimes even more so.
Are you game still?
Join Steve Harrison for a free 90-minute teleseminar on Thursday, June 18, at 2 and 7 p.m. on How to Become a Guest on Top National TV Programs, including those on Fox, ABC, NBC and CBS. Producers from The Wendy Williams Show, Rachael Ray, Live with Kelly & Michael, and Telepictures Productions will explain what to send to them if you want to get onto their shows, and what you shouldn’t send.
Register here. Even though the call is free, this is an affiliate link that earns me a commission if you buy anything from Steve down the road.
2. 9 Fixes for a Bum Press Release
That press release that took you hours to write resulted in zilch. Now what?
PR pro Renee Cormier offers nine excellent tips on how to repurpose your release into different formats like a slidedeck, podcast, infographic, or a series of photos on Pinterest or Instagram. I love her idea of using these platforms to tell a story.

Are you publishing on LinkedIn like Renee is? It’s one of the most underused tools on LinkedIn. Wayne Breitbarth explains some of the others in the replay of a webinar I hosted with him a few months ago. You can find it in my shop, along with a giant bonus package. It includes at self-evaluation so you can score yourself on how well you’re doing on LinkedIn, a checklist of how to get more Company Page followers, and a cheat sheet on 10 Ways to Promote Your Events on LinkedIn. Find it at my shop.
