This Week in the Hound House:
I saw “Spotlight,” the best move of 2015 over the weekend, and it gets four paws up, way up. The horrific story of sexual abuse inside the Catholic Church left me almost numb by the end. But what I saw on the screen during the last minute, before the credits started to roll, was like a punch in the gut. Did you see the movie yet? What did you think about it?
1. Feel the Fear & Do It Anyway
Scared to pitch a hot-shot book reviewer for fear she’ll trash your book?
Frightened about picking up the phone to call your local newspaper and pitch yourself as a subject matter expert?
Panicky about being on TV because you’re afraid you’ll make a fool out of yourself?
I started rereading my favorite self-help book, “Feel the Fear & Do It Anyway” over the weekend. Halfway into Chapter 1, I knew I had to recommend it to you if you’re the least bit squeamish about getting publicity. I read it 20 years ago after I had left the newspaper world and was in a panic about starting my own business.
Written by the late Susan Jeffers, this is the first valuable lesson: “All you have to do to diminish your fear is to develop more trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.” I love that!
You’ll also learn the secret of making “no lose” decisions, the vital 10-step process that helps you outtalk the negative chatterbox in your brain, and how to become powerful in the face of your fears.
To do: Order the book. Read it. Go forth and promote.
2. Slideshare Pulls Traffic, Subscribers
Did you grab the free PowerPoint Templates for SlideShare that I recommended a few weeks ago?
Now that you have a tool to make your content look beautiful, it’s time to think of ways to use this presentation-sharing platform owned by LinkedIn.
How about recycling your best blog posts as SlideShares? It extends the life of your content and acts as a magnet for potential new blogs subscribers. I found an article that gives you step-by-step directions on how to do this, down to the last detail.
To do: Read “How to Get Insane Amounts of Traffic and Subscribers from SlideShare.” Create your first SlideShare and upload it to your LinkedIn profile. Send me the link so I can take a look.
3. Peeple Mobile App Launches
Peeple, the notorious and controversial people-rating mobile app for the iPhone and iPads, launched yesterday.
The application works by allowing users to rate the people they encounter across three categories: personally, professionally, and romantically. You can rank neighbors, roommates, landlords/tenants, business people, and romantic partners–but only with their permission. Users can hide their negative reviews. A future paid subscription option called “truth license” will allow users to access every review, even those that are hidden.
This sounds creepy.
To do: If you’re game, download Peeple here. Let me know what you think of it.
4. Hound Video of the Week
Babies and dogs take each other for a walk. A cute compilation.
