This Weekend in the Hound House:
My walking shoes still squeak. But here’s the good news. I have only a half dozen perennials to plant in the garden this weekend. And the Messina Wildlife’s Animal Stopper, the organic repellant I told you about, is working! Those pesky wabbits don’t stand a chance. Life is good.
1. Deadline Tonight for Email Training
I’m so excited to be teaching email marketing to a group of talented authors who have expertise in a variety of fun, interesting topics.
My Author Email Boot Camp starts next week and registration closes at midnight tonight, or earlier, if 20 authors sign up. Get in right now.
Here are just a few of my students:
- Jude Willhoff, a contemporary romance novelist, who also has expertise on how to deal with chronic pain (not the kind that comes from a broken heart).
- Elizabeth Cottrell who writes about “the connection to self, to others, to nature and to God.
- Laurel McQuarrie, a children’s author and creator of Seafus Slug, who she molded from clay into the form of a mischievous, rambunctious golden slug. Seafus teaches children valuable lessons through his adventures in a fairy tale style of storytelling.
- Dr. Jeri Fink, author of Broken, a thriller series that combines fact, fiction and photo insights.
- Ruth Winden, an executive career coach.
Despite their varied backgrounds, the strategy they will use to make money from email marketing is the same. The types of content they will share in their emails–videos, cheat sheets, checklists, “best of” lists, articles, tips and advice, personal stories–are also the same.
Only their topics are different.
If you’re starting from scratch and have no email list, or a skimpy one, you can register.
I’ll show you how to attract followers, wow them with killer content, turn them into fans, and watch as some of them morph into SuperFans who will buy anything you offer.
Are you in? Don’t let 20 other authors beat you to it. Register now for this pilot at a much lower fee than what the more in-depth course will cost later this year.
2. No Drop-in Pitches
One of my LinkedIn connections told me she’s planning to drop in to radio stations where she wants to be booked as a guest. She’s outgoing, loves talking to strangers, and she’s willing to give it a try.
Not so fast, I said.
Radio stations are busy places, with overworked producers, guest bookers and talk show hosts. We’re all so swamped these days that we almost have to make an appointment to call each other on the phone.
Never drop in unannounced. Call or email first.
3. Learn About PR from the Circus
Puzzled about the difference between advertising, promotion, publicity and PR?
“If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying ‘Circus Coming to the Fairground Saturday,’ that’s advertising. If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town, that’s promotion.
“If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed, that’s publicity. And if you get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s public relations.”
I used that unattributed quote during an audio interview I did about book publicity a few years ago with Joel Friedlander. It’s an oldie but goodie you might have missed.
4. Hound Photos of the Week
When a dog uses a camera connected to a heart rate monitor, this series of photos is what you get. Thanks to Publicity Hound Dan Janal of PRLeads.com for sharing this.
