This Week in the Hound House:

No more squeaking shoe problem. I threw them in the trash and bought new ones. Problem solved.

1. Best Free Media Contact List

Michelle Tennant of Wasabi Publicity tipped me off to USNPL, the giant free database of newspapers, TV and radio contacts in the U.S.

The site lets you search for contact info for U.S. newspapers, TV stations and radio stations by state. Once you get a list of media, you can go directly to the media outlet’s website, or click on links to their Facebook pages and Twitter feeds. Some media have links to their YouTube channels.

USNPL does a pretty good job of keeping up to date with the myriad of changes in the media industry. That’s because it lets media outlets edit the contact information.

I created a three-minute video demonstrating how it works. It’s embedded in the blog post I wrote on 7 Ways to Use the Best Free Media Database for Publicity.

Wouldn’t your LinkedIn connections, Facebook fans, Twitter followers and others love to know about this cool tool? Use the share buttons below.

2. News for Boomers vs. Millennials

When you’re launching a publicity campaign, it’s important to know how people in different generations find their news.

A new study from the Pew Research Center for Media and Journalism shows that more than 60 percent of millennials who were surveyed said that during the previous week, they got their political news from Facebook, compared with 37 percent who got it from TV. Those figures were almost exactly reversed for boomers, who prefer TV.

If you’re targeting millennials, you’d better be using Facebook. Targeting teens? Many of them have abandoned Facebook because that’s where their parents hang out. Their hot “news” tool is Instagram which I haven’t used yet.

Read more about the Pew study.

3. 65+ Free Stock Photo Sites

I let you know when I find a free stock photo site I love. But this tops them all.

It’s a list compiled by Shae Baxter of 65+ Sites to Find Awe-Inspiring Public Domain Images and Clipart for Your Blog + Social Media Posts.

The post is focused exclusively on images placed in the public domain or creative commons zero,” Shae said. “This has its own benefits such as not having to provide any attribution and there’s no copyright restrictions, as opposed to other general free stock photo sites, where copyright can still be an issue and attribution is required.”

What this means to you: No more cheesy stock photos.

4. Hound Video of the Week

Who needs expensive dog toys? Give ’em a thick piece of wood, 12 by 12 inches, and you’ve made their day.
