This Week in the Hound House:
My friend says her thirtysomething daughter uses the word “sick” which is slang for “great.” It sounds weird, but anything is fine if it avoids the ubiquitous “awesome” which makes me cringe every time I hear it.
1. A Publicity Strategy? Puh-leeze
What are you planning to do differently next year to boost your exposure online and offline and build your business?
I’m hoping one of these seven items isn’t on your list:
–Bowing, groveling or genuflecting in front of professional journalists, hoping they will cover you.
–Working hard toward your Ultimate Dream of getting onto “Oprah.” (Authors, this means you!)
–Relying primarily on press releases to announce your news.
–Obsessing over the number of Facebook fans, LinkedIn connections or Twitter followers you have, or the number of Google+ circles you’re in.
–Promising to talk to more people on those sites.
–Redesigning your website, with an emphasis on making it look attractive.
–Writing a book, which will be your ticket to success.
Those are all tactics. And individually or collectively, they don’t mean squat.
I’ve identified seven important things you must do to create a strategy that lets you be seen, heard, found, followed, recommended, studied and hired by people who need what you have. There are two or three things on my list you won’t want like. I know. But they’re imperative.
Join me for a free webinar I’m hosting from 3 to 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, on “7 Things Your 2014 Publicity Strategy Must Include.”
If there are more questions than time, I’ll answer yours via email.

2. YouTube Users Revolt
More than 180,000 people have signed a petition protesting Google’s recent decision to force YouTube users to log in before commenting on videos.
YouTube is famous for having some of the meanest, nastiest comments on the Internet. Anyone who wants to comment must now use Google+–Google’s way of cleaning it up and expanding the number of users.
Read all about it and then watch the very helpful video from Adam Eyster explaining why this was a smart move by Google and how it can help you if you have videos on YouTube.
3. Promote a Webinar, Podcast, Hangout
If you’re hosting or appearing as a guest expert on webinars, podcasts, Google+ Hangouts or even radio shows, you’ll want to know about this very clever way to promote them.
It’s courtesy of Mike Allton, a social media manager in St. Louis. He promoted a Google+ Hangout he was on last week with online visibility expert Denise Wakeman, and then wrote about it at his blog. I like it so much that I dissected it at my blog and I’m going to use is format as a template when I’m a guest.
Take a look at my post, then click through to his so you can see exactly how he does it.
4. Hound Video of the Week
One dog rats out another but remains completely anonymous. Goofy, but it made me laugh.
