When people try to measure the return on investment at social media sites, they use the typical yardsticks—things like how much traffic they pull to their websites, how many people buy, and how many sign-ups they get for their ezines.
One factor they frequently foget is how much time and money they can save using social media connections to help them solve knotty problems. One of my favorite stories is how PR pro Judy Lehman, aka @judysl on Twitter, found another Twitter follower who helped her fix her toilet, thus saving her from calling a plumber.
I’ve seen people cry out for help on Twitter and Facebook when they have computer problems, printers that are jammed, and recipes that turn out bad.
Yesterday morning, I noticed that the window on my HootSuite profile page had disappeared. I love this site and post all my tweets here because it makes it so easy for people to retweet interesting articles I share, by clicking the mouse only once. But there was nowhere to type the message! I spent about 10 minutes at the site trying to find the window, then called my assistant to see if she could help. She doesn’t use HootSuite so she couldn’t.
Twitter! I posted a tweet asking for help.
