Research Bloggers Before You Pitch a Guest Post

In the last few weeks, people who want to write for this blog, devoted to tips for getting free publicity, have suggested the following topics:

  • How to create a bridal bouquet.
  • Tips for cleaning office buildings.
  • Closing techniques for sales teams.
  • How to have a safe vacation.
  • “Anything you think your readers would enjoy.”

Why these topics, all of which have nothing to do with free publicity? Because the people who pitched them are too lazy to read the blog. They’re scraping email addresses from wherever they can find them and throwing any old thing against the wall to see what sticks. In the process, they’re embarrassing themselves.

These pitches usually start with the salutation “Hello” because they didn’t bother to do 30 seconds worth of research so they can address me by my name. They probably sent the identical pitch to several dozen bloggers.
