D.C. panel explains how to do business with independent PR consultants

If you’re thinking of hiring a big PR firm to handle your next publicity campaign, consider the benefits of hiring an independent PR consultant.

The consultant, who might work from her home, probably won’t have to jack up her prices to cover ovherhead. But the PR firm that rents swanky office space in a downtown high-rise certainly does.

People who have been dissatisfied with their PR firms sometimes complain to me that a partner at a big PR firm, who convinced them during an impressive sales presentatiton, immediately handed them over to a junior associate as soon as the contract was signed. I blogged about the dangers of young, inexperienced PR people representing you here and here.

If you live in the Washington, D.C. area, you can learn all about doing business with independent PR consultants at a presentation at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, January 19 at the Chop House, 509 Seventh St. NW.

It’s $25, including lunch. Panelists from the Independent Public Relations Alliance will speak. To register, email Mark Oswell.

Members of the alliance have an average of 18 years of PR experience.
