Authors rent a mall storefront for grassroots selling

Thanks to Publicity Hound Paul Rhetts of Albuquerque, New Mexico for telling us about the 200 New Mexico authors and publishers who banded together during the holidays to sell local books in a storefront at a local mall.

Frustrated by the difficulties getting their books stocked in local and regional bookstores, the New Mexico Book Co-op opened the bookstore specifically to showcase and sell local books.

Some 200 local authors and publishers participated. They even worked in the store during the 41 days from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. The store featured more than 425 local titles, sold more than 3,400 books and had more than $41,000 in sales. After all expenses were paid, the co-opcontributed $5,650 to local literacy projects.

The project was so successful that it might be worth considering in the state where you live.
