Identify this and win a $20 Amazon gift card

I went hiking in the Kettle Moraine State Forest on Sunday with my friend, Christine Buffaloe, who’s visiting from San Diego, and my sharp eye noticed this white thing that was almost obscured.

Can you guess what it is?

Looks to me to be a puffball mushroom ( Calvatia or Calbovista or Lycoperdon, I can’t tell which). Beautiful!

It looks like a wild mushroom and it is a fungi– called a puffball. The Tibetans used some puffballs for making ink.

It looks like the puff ball mushrooms that turn up occasionally in my yard. My neighbor insists that they are great to eat when fried in a little butter. I have not had the courage to eat one myself.
