Use keywords in anchor text links
When you include links in a press release you’re emailing to the media or to a release that will be posted to your website, don’t miss the opportunity to use keywords in your anchor text links.
I see some links that say “click here” or “visit our store” or “watch this video”. To get the most SEO benefits from your links, include descriptive, keyword-based anchor text so the search engines know what you’re linking to.
For example, if you’re linking to a page on your website about blue and white kitchen curtains, you’d want to use keywords like “blue and white kitchen curtains” in the anchor text when linking to those pages. It also lets readers know what will be on the page you’re linking to.
But don’t force keywords into your anchor text if they don’t belong there.
Important Note: If you are distributing a press release through one of the press release distribution services, some of the services might not use anchor text because it won’t help you with search engine optimization as far as Google is concerned. That’s because Google changed its rules several years ago when many companies started writing bad-quality releases and publishing them through the paid distribution services. One reason they wrote so many releases was to get many links back to their websites from specific keyword phrases. Google noticed and now doesn’t give “Google juice” to press releases with anchor text links. It views those press releases as a form of advertising. You’ll learn more about the paid press release services in Module 12.
Bottom line: If you’re using a press release service to write or distribute your release, they’ll format the links according to their own rules.
