If you saw a reporter from your local newspaper sitting at a
\npicnic\u00a0table in a local park with his family, and you had a story you
\nwanted him to cover, would you invite yourself to eat lunch with
\nthe family and sit down at the table?<\/p>\n
Of course you wouldn’t.<\/p>\n
But that’s how intrusive you’d look if you tried to connect with
\nhim on Facebook, where he prefers to communicate with his family
\nand friends.<\/p>\n
Some journalists feel put upon–creepy even–if somebody they
\ndon’t\u00a0know tries to play in their Facebook sandbox all in the name of
\ntrying to get publicity.<\/p>\n
There are far better ways to connect with the guy. Is he on
\nTwitter? If so, do you retweet his content?<\/p>\n
Is he on LinkedIn? If so, what groups does he belong to? Have you
\njoined those groups? You can communicate with him that way
\nwithout\u00a0being a first-, second- or third-level connection.<\/p>\n
Have you Googled his name to see what you can learn about him?<\/p>\n
Most people wouldn’t bother with that. They’re the same people
\nwho\u00a0are always grousing that they can’t get coverage.<\/p>\n

\nfor companies that have several people working on the same page.
