\n1. Wikipedia’s Many Errors

Here’s another reason not to rely on Wikipedia as a trusted
\nsource of knowledge for anything.<\/p>\n
A new study published in the Public Relations Journal shows that
\na stunning 60 percent of articles about specific companies
\ncontained factual errors.<\/p>\n
The research was conducted by Marcia W. DiStaso, Ph.D., co-chair
\nof PRSA’s National Research Committee and an assistant professor
\nof public relations at Penn State University. She surveyed 1,284
\nPR professionals to find out how they use Wikipedia or correct
\nerrors they find there.<\/p>\n
“It does not surprise me that so many Wikipedia entries contain
\nfactual errors,” said DiStaso. “What is surprising, however, is
\nthat 25 percent of survey respondents indicated they are not
\nfamiliar with the Wikipedia articles for their company or
\nclients. At some point most, if not all, companies will determine
\nthey need to change something in their Wikipedia entries. Without
\nclear, consistent rules from Wikipedia regarding how factual
\ncorrections can be made this will be a very difficult learning
\nprocess for public relations professionals.”<\/p>\n
Wikipedia’s editing process is so cumbersome, that some people
\njust don’t bother. Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, told the
\nAssociated Press last fall that Wikipedia is losing the crowd
\nthat keeps it updated. The typical profile of a contributor is “a
\n26-year-old geeky male” who moves on to their ventures and leaves
\nthe website.<\/p>\n
Administrators are working to simplify the way users can
\ncontribute and edit materials. Finally.<\/p>\n

I wasn’t bowled over by that. But I’ll admit, it would make me
\nopen the email. It’s straightforward and explains exactly what
\nthe email is about.<\/p>\n
