“I live in the Caribbean and am publishing a Real Estate Guide.\u00a0However, there are two major dailies in my country and they are very\u00a0territorial and do not want to feature my company or my magazine\u00a0because we are indirect competitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I sent one of the dailies a\u00a0press release and it published about half of it in the newspaper but\u00a0omitted the half that had the\u00a0contact information such as\u00a0email\/phone and website address. It is still a partial win though\u00a0because I thought that they wouldn’t publish anything at all.<\/p>\n
“How can I\u00a0leverage this to start the buzz for my\u00a0magazine and to attract more advertisers?\u00a0The magazine is scheduled for release in\u00a0early March.<\/p>\n
“P.S.\u00a0 I was also thinking of placing ads in the same dailies as well\u00a0once the magazine is printed, Is this wrong or tacky?”<\/p>\n
Here’s my answer:<\/p>\n
Try sending the news release to all the lower-level publications\u00a0that might not necessarily view you as competition:\u00a0weeklies, business magazines, weekly shoppers,\u00a0any\u00a0special-interest publications you find in the supermarket\u00a0or in\u00a0doctors’ offices. You want real estate agents\u00a0to advertise,\u00a0right?\u00a0Do a direct-mail\u00a0piece to them. That’s your market.<\/p>\n
As for buying an ad, even though the newspaper doesn’t want to print your press release in full, they won’t hesitate to take your money for an ad.\u00a0There’s nothing wrong or tacky about buying an ad. I’d just like to see you shoot for as much free publicity as you can get.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Also, don’t forget letters to the editor of those publications. You can always write letters that comment on stories they’ve printed. Include your title in the signature of your letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
