It sure is quiet around here. More than 100,000 Harley riders\u00a0have headed for home after spending the weekend at the 110th\u00a0anniversary in Milwaukee. They came from as far as Australia.\u00a0Even my own little town had a “Rock the Harbor” party Friday\u00a0night. Thanks, H.O.G.s, for putting on a great show, sharing the\u00a0road and dumping millions into our local economy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
1. Hot Topic: Jobs Training<\/h3>\n
Why so many stories about the cost and importance of a college\u00a0education, and so few stories about job training programs for\u00a0kids who can acquire skills for a good-paying job in less than\u00a0five years, or for those who can’t afford college?<\/p>\n
Mike Rowe, star of the hit TV show “Dirty Jobs,” offers one of\u00a0the best quotes on the job problem in the U.S.:<\/p>\n
“We are lending money we don\u2019t have to kids who can\u2019t pay it back\u00a0to train them for jobs that no longer exist. That\u2019s nuts.”<\/p>\n
Here, then, are story ideas I’d like to see. If these tie into\u00a0something you or your company does, start pitching!<\/p>\n
–Employment experts, offer your best advice on how kids, or the\u00a0unemployed, can develop job skills fairly quickly. Which jobs are\u00a0most in demand, and what’s the best way to acquire skills for\u00a0those jobs?<\/p>\n
–Most trade schools do a pitiful job promoting their offerings.\u00a0Don’t they have PR people?<\/p>\n
–If your company offers free training that moves qualified\u00a0people into jobs, start promoting it.<\/p>\n
–Does your nonprofit train volunteers who can then take those\u00a0skills into the corporate world?<\/p>\n
–Do you teach technology skills that others will need when\u00a0applying for certain types of jobs? Look at your own blog, ezine,\u00a0YouTube channel, podcasts or other content. Consider pitching it\u00a0as “skills training” for the unemployed or underemployed.<\/p>\n
–Authors, speakers and experts: Offer tips on the dozens of\u00a0“soft skills” people need to not only get a job, but advance in\u00a0it.

2. The Kim Komando Show<\/h3>\n
Everybody, it seems, including me, believes they’re “technology\u00a0challenged.” I’ll bet you do, too.<\/p>\n
That’s why you’ll love “The Kim Komando Show,” a three-hour call-\u00a0in radio show broadcast weekends on 450 stations throughout the\u00a0U.S.<\/p>\n
She bills herself as “The Technology Goddess,” and I’m in awe\u00a0very time I listen to the show on Sunday nights here in\u00a0Milwaukee. It seems like this woman knows everything, from\u00a0helping callers with computer problems to the best apps or tech\u00a0gadgets to help you do things faster and smarter.<\/p>\n
What does this have to do with publicity and PR? Plenty.<\/p>\n
Self-promotion is hard enough without hassling with a computer\u00a0virus, a smart phone you don’t know how to use, or wasting time\u00a0trying to do something you could have done within seconds if you\u00a0had only listened to her show.<\/p>\n
