Being mentioned in books was one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> Yes. That&#8217;s a great way to become a recognized expert. Right now, I\u2019m thinking that I may even write a blog post about this\u2014<strong>7 ways to be mentioned in other people\u2019s books.<\/strong> That could be a cheat sheet too. I\u2019ve been mentioned in more than 60 books on publicity, marketing and small business promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On my order forms, I ask people how they heard about me. They\u2019ll say, \u201cIn Stephanie Chandler\u2019s book,\u201d or \u201cIn John Kremer\u2019s book,\u201d or in someone else&#8217;s book. Maybe that author is somebody who I\u2019ve forgotten about because I was in their book 12 years ago. But<strong> the book is still on the shelf<\/strong> and somebody picked it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> And found it, yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Publish Content in Multiple Formats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> Think of ways you can take your content and <strong>repurpose it<\/strong> into a variety of different formats. For example, I could take this one-hour interview, get it transcribed and I could chunk it up into four or five blog posts. I would do <strong>a series of blog posts<\/strong> over a week. It doesn\u2019t cost a lot of money to have them transcribed. Go over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Fiverr.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fiverr.com<\/a>.&nbsp;You could probably get a &nbsp;one-hour transcript for maybe $40, less than a dollar a minute. To pay $40 to have four or five blog posts published, are you kidding me? <strong>That\u2019s a steal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to edit all this content and you have to upload it to your blog, but so what? I don\u2019t want to have to sit here and write five blog posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can then take one of those blog posts, just one\u2014and Judith, you\u2019ll love this one and I know you do this\u2014you can take that one blog posts and you can <strong>chunk it up into 15 tweets.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> Oh, easily. Absolutely. This is what we do after our shows. I create a bunch of tweets\u2014you know I love Twitter\u2014and we push out posts to show all the podcasts and that\u2019s where <strong>a lot of our listeners come from.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> Right. Then you could take five tweets that are all related on the same topic and you could create <strong>a quick YouTube video<\/strong>, either a talking head video or a slide show video&#8212;something for your YouTube channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now remember, this is all the same content. &nbsp;You\u2019re just repurposing it in a different format. When you create content to promote your expertise, <strong>you don\u2019t always have to start from scratch.<\/strong> Look back to see what you\u2019ve already done that can be repurposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n[Tweet &#8220;How authors make it easy for people to find them online. #authormarketing&#8221;]\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create an &#8220;Aha&#8221; Ebook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> That\u2019s critical. I should say that tweets are interesting. I\u2019ve been behind the whole Twitter thing. I like the way Twitter works. I like <strong>fast, short, move it out,<\/strong> you\u2019re over with it. One of the little books that I did last week went out to our speakers and I said, \u201cHey, give me a bunch of tweets and we\u2019re going to put together what\u2019s called <a href=\"http:\/\/Aha.Pub\/AuthorU-Conf \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an &#8220;Aha&#8221; Book<\/a>&nbsp;complete with hashtags.&nbsp;It\u2019s done and we will have it next week, polished up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could create a Twitter book of all your quotes or your ahas or whatever you bring into play. Or as Joan says, she could take a podcast, she could have it transcribed. She would have a dozen new blogs posts that she could create off that. She could then create <strong>a bunch of one-liners<\/strong> and rebroadcast that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do this stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong>&nbsp;Exactly. You mentioned hashtags. I don\u2019t know how many of your listeners are aware of what hashtags are. But if you\u2019re not using hashtags, you\u2019re missing a golden opportunity to <strong>help people find your content found online.<\/strong>&nbsp;Judith, do you want to explain what a hashtag is before we go on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Use Hashtags<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> Sure, a hashtag is <strong>the pound sign,<\/strong> and you use a hashtag directly in front of any keyword.&nbsp;You can use that in a line or you could make a statement or you could do a post on Facebook or Google+ or wherever you\u2019re going to do it. You can use a hashtag in the title of an article or &nbsp;blog post. Certainly within your first paragraph so it gets picked up. (Editor&#8217;s Note: An example of a hashtag Joan uses frequently in her posts is #publicitytips )&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What it does is, that let\u2019s say you\u2019re writing something, you\u2019re an expert on change. You would put whatever you wrote in a line, \u201cChange is inevitable,\u201d you would put a hashtag in front of \u201cChange is inevitable,\u201d so people who follow #change and who are looking for that hashtag in search\u2014it could be a reporter, it could be someone who is doing their own research, it could be someone who is coping with change. They could go into the search engines and literally type #change and this would start coming up. Depending on what kind of clout you have, it will make <strong>all the difference in the world<\/strong> on your searchability, those keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let me just say, because I used my example and said, \u201cChange is inevitable,\u201d if you are sending something out\u2014a lot of people don\u2019t realize this\u2014that if you put a hashtag in front of the first word of any sentence that begins it,<strong> it will not amplify it.<\/strong> You need to <strong>put a period in front of it first.<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if you knew that, Joan. Exampe: .#change<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> No, I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> Well, there\u2019s your aha. You need to know that and take advantage of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So <strong>a hashtag directs people into a narrow tunnel<\/strong> instead of a broad, scattered field. Use a hashtag in front of a keyword that you want to be identified with or you want to make prominent in your postings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> Right. If you\u2019re not quite sure what Judith is talking about, go online and search for <strong>\u201chow to use a hashtag.\u201d<\/strong> There\u2019s a lot of content online about it. But we wanted to let you know that because it\u2019s a great way to have your content found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> I\u2019ve written a couple of blog posts on it, so if you went onto the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.authoru.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AuthorU.org<\/a> website and went down to the very bottom of the home page and do a search and put in \u201chashtags,\u201d the posts will come up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> Right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> So where do we go from here? We know what experts are. I know you have more tips on your list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n[Tweet &#8220;How authors make it easy for people to find them online. #authormarketing&#8221;]\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to Promote Your Expertise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> I have something that I think your listeners might want to know about. Let\u2019s say that people start to build their expertise because they start to get out there and do a lot of the things we\u2019re talking about. They create content, they start to speak. How do they let other people know they\u2019re an expert? In other words, where do you refer to yourself as an expert? How do you use this word expert?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me give you a couple of ideas. Certainly in <strong>your author bios<\/strong> and in your <strong>media kit.<\/strong> Let\u2019s say you\u2019re a privacy expert. You call yourself a privacy expert in <strong>your email signature.<\/strong> What about your <strong>book jacket<\/strong>? Certainly your <strong>social media profiles<\/strong>&#8212;and you should all have <strong>a Google profile<\/strong> which follows you around the Internet. <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/+JoanStewartPH\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(See Joan&#8217;s Google profile.)&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could call yourself an expert in your <strong>LinkedIn headline<\/strong>. That\u2019s the short description that appears right under your name on your LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"581\" height=\"284\" src=\"https:\/\/purelysupp.com\/publicity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/05\/Pubolicity-expert-Joan-Stewart-headline-on-LinkedIn.jpg\" alt=\"Pubolicity expert Joan Stewart's LinkedIn\" class=\"wp-image-29286\" title=\"Publicity expert on LinkedIn\" srcset=\"https:\/\/purelysupp.com\/publicity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/05\/Pubolicity-expert-Joan-Stewart-headline-on-LinkedIn.jpg 581w, https:\/\/purelysupp.com\/publicity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/05\/Pubolicity-expert-Joan-Stewart-headline-on-LinkedIn-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certainly in <strong>author resource boxes<\/strong> at the end of<strong> guest blog posts<\/strong> or <strong>articles you\u2019re writing<\/strong> for other people\u2019s websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in your <strong>speaker introductions<\/strong>. The first two words of my speaker introduction are, \u201cPublicity expert.\u201d Example: \u201cPublicity expert Joan Stewart&#8230;. blah, blah, blah. &#8220;Because I want to sow that seed in the minds of my audience members that I\u2019m a publicity expert and that\u2019s why I\u2019m there speaking to them&#8212;because I&#8217;m an expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I refer to myself as a publicity expert right <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.PublicityHound.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on my home page<\/a><\/strong>. You can do it in your<strong> press releases.<\/strong> You can have <strong>a short tagline<\/strong> that you use anywhere. I often say, \u201cJoan Stewart, Publicity Expert.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do it <strong>in book reviews<\/strong>&nbsp;you&#8217;re writing for Amazon or some of the <strong>book review and book recommendation sites<\/strong>&nbsp;like Goodreads. You can do it on your <strong>Amazon profile,<\/strong> in <strong>trade association directorie<\/strong>s, in <strong>media interviews,<\/strong> in<strong> your elevator pitch<\/strong>, in your <strong>testimonial<\/strong>s you give other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> So you start it and make it a habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> Absolutely, everywhere. Here\u2019s one: How about on <strong>your name tag<\/strong> when you go to events and you have the little \u201cHello, my name is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/purelysupp.com\/publicity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/04\/Privacy-Expert.jpg\" alt=\"Privacy Expert nametag\" class=\"wp-image-29136\" title=\"Promote expertise on a nametag\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> Great idea. Actually, let\u2019s just transition here to our final break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joan:<\/strong> How about if we promise<strong> fiction authors<\/strong> that we&#8217;ll tell them all the ways they can become experts? I&#8217;ll bet some of them are lost at sea on how to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Judith:<\/strong> Many of them are, with all the research they do.
