Today,<strong> you are the media too. <\/strong>Your platform might not be as big as theirs, but you have <strong>tools to fight back.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s what Walmart demonstrated after Timothy Egan, a columnist for the New York Times, wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/20\/opinion\/timothy-egan-walmart-starbucks-and-the-fight-against-inequality.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a June 19 opinion column<\/a>&nbsp;spanking the retailer for low wages, part-time contracts and other sins that have resulted in &#8220;public disdain for the company.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same day, Walmart responded by fact-checking <strong>the entire column<\/strong> in red and posting it <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.walmart.com\/fact-check-the-new-york-times-the-corporate-daddy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on their blog<\/a>. Walmart&#8217;s rebuttal had much more reach than the Times column. It was covered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/timworstall\/2014\/06\/23\/walmarts-delightful-smackdown-of-the-new-york-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2014\/06\/23\/walmart-blog-post-issues-scathing-response-to-new-york-times-columnist-timothy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News,<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/new-york-times-responds-to-wal-mart-2014-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Insider<\/a>&nbsp;and a variety of conservative media outlets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Will be Fact-Checked Too<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Walmart&#8217;s rebuttal was clever and effective. But here&#8217;s the danger in a public fact-check. Someone, somewhere, will probably fact-check you, too. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Gongloff, a columnist for The Huffington Post, responded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/06\/24\/walmart-fact-check-new-york-times_n_5525588.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fact-Checking Walmart&#8217;s Fact-Check of The New York Times.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the debate probably won&#8217;t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is Why You Should be Blogging<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If a journalist or blogger treats you unfairly, one of the best places to respond is<strong> at your own blog<\/strong> where you have full control of the message. You can then pitch other media outlets and point them to your blog post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Walmart-New York Times battle is one more example of why <strong>most companies should be blogging.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you want to respond but you don&#8217;t have a blog, you&#8217;re forced to rely on an <strong>expensive press release distribution service. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can respond on social media sites like YouTube and Facebook, but the message will be lost on those noisy platforms. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Would You Do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you publicly fact-check a journalist&#8217;s or blogger&#8217;s article about you?
