And because lots of those big media outlets reach a general audience of millions, you&#8217;d better have a damn good pitch.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you&#8217;d be far better off targeting niched newsletter editors, ezine publishers, discussion forums, bloggers and\u00a0Internet marketers who have a decent-size email list of people who\u00a0are also your target audience. Many of these &#8220;journalists&#8221; and &#8220;publishers&#8221; have followers all over the world, unlike many mainstream media that reach regional audiences, or mostly people in\u00a0one country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131125100447\/http:\/\/www.whatsnextblog.com:80\/2007\/01\/12_tenets_of_social_media_marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BL Ochman&#8217;s 12 Tenet&#8217;s of Social Media Marketing<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0sort of\u00a012 Commandments\u00a0for those seeking publicity online.\u00a0Tenet #2 reads: <strong>Though shalt cover all media.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Today media is a collective term for the producers of content for mass and, yea, also for niche consumption. Thou must niche or be niched. Thy niches may include surly teenagers in fly-over states, as well as disgruntled consumers. To communicate with them successfully you must approach them from the right perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Thou shalt not piss them off by ignoring or patronizing them, for if thou do, they shalt bite you on the ass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">If you pitch big-time media you need to have big-time story ideas. However, despair not because these days everyone with a web site, newsletter, blog, e-zine, Mail List or forum is a journalist.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you find these niche\u00a0audiences?\u00a0Here are a few suggestions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;Asked a question on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.LinkedIn.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0For example, I would ask, &#8220;Can someone recommend the best print\u00a0newsletters, ezines, blogs, discussion forums and websites\u00a0that target people who want to promote a product, service, cause or issue?&#8221;\u00a0The LinkedIn community responds quickly, and many LinkedIn users provide\u00a0thoughtful and very helpful answers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;Ask\u00a0the same question on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter.<\/a><\/strong> The more friends and followers you have, the more responses you&#8217;re likely to get.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.Google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google.<\/a><\/strong> Do a search for\u00a0keywords and keyword phrases and see what you can find.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;Search at <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technorati.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0This search engine will let you know which bloggers are discussing your topic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<strong>Create <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google Alerts <\/strong><\/a><strong>for your topics.<\/strong>\u00a0You can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/blog\/google-alerts-leads-to-good-morning-america-gig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to use Google Alerts<\/a>\u00a0and how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/blog\/google-reporters-bloggers-before-pitching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google reporters, bloggers before pitching<\/a>.
