{"id":1783,"date":"2008-08-20T07:12:59","date_gmt":"2008-08-20T07:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicityhound.com\/blog\/?p=1783"},"modified":"2025-06-07T16:33:48","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T16:33:48","slug":"write-a-letter-to-the-editor-to-promote-your-expertise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/purelysupp.com\/publicity\/marketing\/print-media\/write-a-letter-to-the-editor-to-promote-your-expertise\/","title":{"rendered":"Write a letter to the editor to promote your expertise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/keyboard.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/keyboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1786\" style=\"float: left;margin: 5px 7px\" title=\"keyboard\" src=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/keyboard-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Fingers typing a letter on a keyboard \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>When you can&#8217;t think of a story idea to pitch, and you&#8217;re dying to get into a certain online or print publication,\u00a0 write a letter to the editor.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what I did\u00a0just now after\u00a0reading the August issue of Independent, the excellent newsletter (it&#8217;s more like a magazine) published by the Independent Book Publishers Association.\u00a0An article titled &#8220;How to Handle Complaints&#8221; by Janelle Barlow and Claus Moller\u00a0missed what I thought was the most obvious way to\u00a0make a complaining customer feel better.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the letter:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cHow to Handle Complaints\u201d in the August 2008 issue missed the Number One most obvious way to handle complaints and keep customers for life: pick up the telephone and call them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">That\u2019s what I usually do when I receive an email from a particularly angry customer, or a sort-of-angry customer.\u00a0 The response is almost always the same: \u201cI can\u2019t believe you\u2019re calling me\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m really impressed because nobody calls anymore\u201d or \u201cI didn\u2019t expect a call\u2026I just wanted to vent.\u00a0 What an honor it is to hear from you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Calling them gives me a chance to apologize profusely and let them know how sorry I am, to offer something for free like a $10 special report of their choosing, and to tell them about other free information at my Web site that they might not know about.\u00a0In a few cases, I\u2019ve even been able to sell the person more products than the one they originally had trouble downloading, or didn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I always call if someone demands a refund, and I\u2019m able to save the sale in four out of five cases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">I also take issue with the authors\u2019 recommendation to get back to the person who is complaining within two weeks, either by letter or email.\u00a0Two weeks?\u00a0That\u2019s an eternity! In my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Special Report #4: How to Write Crisp, Compelling Letters to the Editor that Promote Your Product, Service or Favorite Cause,&#8221;<\/a> I encourage writers to weave into the letter facts about their business. One great way to start a letter is to refer to yourself as an expert.\u00a0Example: &#8220;As a publicity expert who teaches people how to promote online and offline&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<strong>Get you in front of a targeted audience.<\/strong> Authors and publishers are in my target market.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<strong>Promote your\u00a0business philosophy.<\/strong>\u00a0I&#8217;m fanatic about customer sevice. This letter proves it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<strong>Promote your websites.<\/strong> Many editors won&#8217;t let you include your URLs at the end of the letter. But this newsletter does, perhaps because it&#8217;s a trade publication written for its members.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think?
