Some of them are finally using social networking sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> to find sources or look for story ideas.<\/p>\n<p>One area where you won&#8217;t see many journalists participating, however, is in the comments section at blogs and in public forums. Blogger Amy Gahran, a content strategist, has started an interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/how-tos\/digital-strategies\/e-media-tidbits\/89283\/journos-do-you-post-public-comments-whywhy-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion<\/a> about why journalists either do or don&#8217;t post public comments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/amygahran.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1494\" style=\"margin: 5px 9px;float: left\" title=\"amygahran\" src=\"https:\/\/www.publicityhound.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/amygahran.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"104\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&#8220;I have some theories as to why journalists seem more reluctant than other folks to engage in public conversation online. Most of these relate to the toxic culture I think has developed in journalism and news organizations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s asking journalists about whether they comment.<\/p>\n<p>As a former journalist for 22 years, here are my guesses as to why few are participating:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They&#8217;re just too busy. Newsrooms are being gutted and quartered. The survivors are now doing double- and tripe-duty.<\/li>\n<li>Many are now saddled with creating video as well as articles. Go over to AngryJournalist.com and you&#8217;ll see lots of them grousing about this.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re afraid that if they identify themselves in blog comments or public forums, somebody will pitch them and the pitch will have nothing to do with what they cover.<\/li>\n<li>Many of the journalist reading blogs and forum posts are there to find sources and story ideas, sometimes on deadline.
