You can get them for under $10 on Amazon and<br \/>\nat nurseries.<\/p>\n<p>======================================<br \/>\n1. &#8220;Can I Pick Your Brain?&#8221;<br \/>\n======================================<\/p>\n<p>If a journalist asks that question, and you know you can help,<br \/>\nlet him pick, pick, pick until he has what he needs and you&#8217;ve<br \/>\nconvinced him that you&#8217;re an expert.<\/p>\n<p>But what about tire-kickers and cheapskates&#8211;people who want<br \/>\neverything for free? What if someone connects with you on a site<br \/>\nlike Facebook or Twitter and asks, &#8220;Can I pick your brain?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Laura Roeder, a social media marketing expert, recommends you<br \/>\nrespond with this simple phrase:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m glad to hear you&#8217;re interested in getting deeper into this.<br \/>\nThe next step is my one-hour consultation. Hook Journalists on LinkedIn<br \/>\n====================================<\/p>\n<p>A journalist types a phrase into the Google search engine,<br \/>\nlooking for sources to interview on your area of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Your LinkedIn profile comes up on the first page of the search<br \/>\nresults. She clicks on it and likes what she sees when she lands<br \/>\non your profile page.<\/p>\n<p>But she isn&#8217;t interested in inviting you to connect with her.<br \/>\nInstead, she wants to keep you on her radar screen because she<br \/>\nthinks you might be able to help her months from now.<\/p>\n<p>She clicks on your company name, hoping to be taken to your<br \/>\nCompany Page where she can follow your status updates.<\/p>\n<p>But she&#8217;s out of luck. You don&#8217;t have a Company Page. She clicks<br \/>\noff your profile, goes back to the Google search list and chooses<br \/>\nsomeone else&#8217;s profile on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve just lost what could be a valuable media contact and,<br \/>\npotentially, thousands of dollars in free publicity. Don&#8217;t let<br \/>\nthat happen!<\/p>\n<p>Create a Company Page, fill it with rich multimedia, and know all<br \/>\nthe ways to encourage journalists, potential clients and others<br \/>\nto click on the &#8220;Follow&#8221; button. How Not to Use Press Releases<br \/>\n====================================<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for big-time publicity, don&#8217;t rely on the lowly<br \/>\npress release to catch the attention of a reporter or TV<br \/>\nproducer.<\/p>\n<p>Those releases have their place. They&#8217;re best used on press<br \/>\nrelease distribution sites where they can go directly to<br \/>\njournalists who cover a certain topic. You can also use them to<br \/>\nreach consumers directly with your message.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t use them to catch the attention of a busy reporter or<br \/>\nblogger show is undated with hundreds of other releases. You&#8217;re<br \/>\nfar better off coming up with a compelling &#8220;hook&#8221; or angle,<br \/>\ncustomizing it for the media outlet and pitching it.
