Online marking expert BL Ochman <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130828023021\/http:\/\/www.whatsnextblog.com\/2008\/02\/why_social_media_and_andres_bianciotto_rock_and_why_pr_week_adicio_still_su\/\" rel=\"noopener\">blogged<\/a> about\u00a0the nightmare she endured\u00a0when she was the victim of a spam attack by PRWeek and its email consulting firm, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adicio.com\" rel=\"noopener\">Adicio.com<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adicio sent out more than 3,200 emails\u00a0 to an OPEN list of PRWeek newsletter subscribers, and then re-sent that message and the passwords of everyone on the list to each person as many as 1,000 times over the next 24 hours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;incident&#8221; corrupted her Microsoft identity database and rendered Word and Entourage unusable, forcing her to spend\u00a0$161\u00a0to buy Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" width=\"120\" src=\"http:\/\/whatsnextonline.com\/images\/bio\/bl_bio_shadow.jpg\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"BL Ochman\" height=\"150\" title=\"BL Ochman\" \/>&#8220;But this isn&#8217;t a post about why PRWeek sucks or why Adicio.com sucks. It&#8217;s a post about the real impact of social media on corporate reputation. And about the cluelessness of the PR industry in general about social media, and the inability&#8212;or maybe it&#8217;s the refusal&#8212;of corporations to believe that consumers really <em>do<\/em> have the tools and the power to influence brand reputation and sales.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>BL turned to the social networking community for help.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/andresb.net\/blog\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Andr\u00e9s Bianciatto<\/a>, a friend whom she met online through\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter,<\/a> where she chronicled her entire nightmare, spent five hours on the phone with her early this morning\u00a0helping her to recover from the spam attack. She writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&#8220;Corporate CMOS, CEOs, CFOs,<\/strong> listen up&#8212;what is said and done in Twitter and other social networks has more to do with your brand reputation than anything else you are doing to sell your goods and services.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After she blogged about the incident and demanded that PRWeek and Adicio\u00a0reimburse her the\u00a0$161 for the software and send her a free iPod nano, the topic of the spam emails, PRWeek editor Julia Hood called her and said\u00a0the newspaper would meet her demands. So far, she says, all Adicio has done is issue a lame excuse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I commented at BL&#8217;s blog and said that I think the newspaper should assign its own columnist, Hamilton Nolan, to write about the crisis in the next issue.\u00a0His column, &#8220;PR Play of the Week,&#8221; highlights a PR play and rates it on a five-point system, from a #1 (clueless) to a #5 (ingenious).<\/p>\n<p>We know exactly which rating that PR mistake deserves.
