\n1. Tie a No-News Event to a Charity
\n======================================<\/p>\n
It isn’t exactly the type of news event I would have raced to
\ncover, back in my days as a newspaper reporter.<\/p>\n
“How does our hotel get publicity for replacing all our old
\nmattresses when the public doesn’t give a hoot about new
\nmattresses?” asked a hotel operator.<\/p>\n
She was in the audience when I presented my session this week on
\n“Savvy Media Relations” for the Wisconsin Lodging Conference &
\nTrade Show.<\/p>\n
Even before I could suggest an idea for publicity, she answered
\nher own question.<\/p>\n
“What are we supposed to do? Promote the fact we’re giving the
\nold mattresses to a charity?”<\/p>\n
Uh, that’s exactly what you should do, I told her.<\/p>\n
This story is custom-made for TV because of the visuals. Can’t
\nyou just see piles of mattresses in the parking lot, being
\nhoisted one by one onto a semi-tractor trailer?<\/p>\n
When you have a not-very-interesting event, consider a way to
\nwork in a charitable contribution where more than just cash or a
\ncheck changes hands.<\/p>\n
Ditching your old computers and monitors? Donate them to a local
\nsenior citizens center. Throw in a free class, taught by one of
\nyour employees, on how the elderly can create an account on
\nFacebook and connect with their grandkids. Find a few seniors who
\nwould be willing to be interviewed, and you’ve practically handed
\nthe TV stations a story on a silver platter.<\/p>\n
Humane societies need things like postal scales to weigh kittens
\nand even artwork for their annual fund-raisers’ silent auction.
\n(TV LOVES news stories about kittens and puppies, by the way.)<\/p>\n

\n2. Invite Bragging on Facebook
\n=====================================<\/p>\n
People love to talk about themselves, and they especially love to
\nbrag.<\/p>\n
So let them brag all they want on your Facebook page. It’s a
\ngreat way to drive traffic, get more Likes and prompt somebody to
\ndrop what they’re doing and respond, even in the middle of a very
\nbusy work day.<\/p>\n
Here are some examples:<\/p>\n
–Graphic artists, ask people to post links to their Facebook
\npages and profiles that have unusual, creative cover photos at
\nthe top.<\/p>\n
–Blogging experts, invite your fans to link to the most popular
\npost at their blog.<\/p>\n
–Book coaches, encourage your author followers to “crow about
\nyour best cover” and link to the book, either at their website or
\non Amazon.<\/p>\n
Invite them from your Linkedin groups, or from a tweet, from your
\nblog, or from your ezine. Ask other page administrators on
\nFacebook to spread the word among their fans.<\/p>\n
