These three things almost drove me crazy<br \/>\nwhen I started using Facebook:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;The incredibly elaborate user interface which seems to have no<br \/>\nrhyme or reason. Sure, anybody can figure it out, but only if<br \/>\nthey have several hours to kill so they can make a bunch of<br \/>\nmistakes and then learn from them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Two of the most powerful things you can do on Facebook&#8211;create<br \/>\npages to promote your business and create a special interest<br \/>\ngroup&#8211;are hidden behind teeny, tiny Applications icons in the<br \/>\nlower left corner of the screen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Everybody keeps referring to the Wall. So where the heck is my<br \/>\nWall? I found it accidentally&#8211;it&#8217;s the first tab buried under<br \/>\nthe &#8220;Profile&#8221; page.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;And speaking of the Profile page, what&#8217;s the difference between<br \/>\nProfile, Home and the &#8220;Joan Stewart&#8221; page?<\/p>\n<p>You probably have your own complaints. <a href=\"https:\/\/publicityhound.com\/blog\/dont-let-facebook-confuse-or-intimidate-you-or-youll-miss-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I listed many more of them<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/publicityhound.com\/blog\/dont-let-facebook-confuse-or-intimidate-you-or-youll-miss-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> in the blog post I wrote.<\/a> It includes the link where you can watch Julian<br \/>\nSmith&#8217;s popular YouTube video on &#8220;25 Things I Hate About Facebook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With a lot of patience and a little direction, you can figure out<br \/>\nthose basic problems. Then, it&#8217;s time to take it a step further<br \/>\nand use the other cool features on Facebook, like adding videos<br \/>\nto your YouTube channel or offering your Facebook friends a<br \/>\nspecial coupon.<\/p>\n<p>My virtual assistant, <a href=\"http:\/\/serenityva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christine Buffaloe<\/a>, who manages Facebook<br \/>\nfor many of her clients, has identified 11 missed opportunities<br \/>\nthat leave money on the table. Getting onto Oprah<br \/>\n=====================================<\/p>\n<p>Pitch a story idea that resonates with Oprah.<\/p>\n<p>If it presses her hot button, you&#8217;re more than halfway onto the<br \/>\nshow. Here are three examples of topics she loves:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;If you&#8217;re a health expert who can speak on the topic of<br \/>\nperimenopause, you stand a decent chance of being considered as a<br \/>\nguest. That&#8217;s because Oprah is experiencing perimenopausal<br \/>\nsymptoms, and she&#8217;s had several segments devoted to that topic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Her constant battle with the scale leaves the door open to<br \/>\nguests who can discuss the always-popular topic of how to claim<br \/>\nvictory over the battle with food. Fitness experts, this includes<br \/>\nyou, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;She loves the topic of &#8220;beauty from the inside out.&#8221; That means<br \/>\nlooking and feeling good and making the best use of your skills,<br \/>\nabilities and talents. It&#8217;s a broad topic that can encompass many<br \/>\ntypes of guest experts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oprah&#8217;s show is very personal,&#8221; says Susan Harrow, creator of<br \/>\n&#8220;The Ultimate Guide to Getting Booked on Oprah,&#8221; a package of<br \/>\ntools that walks experts through the 15 steps they must take to<br \/>\nget booked as a guest. &#8220;Watch the show and you can see what she&#8217;s<br \/>\nstruggling with, like her thyroid problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Susan will be one of several guest experts on the CNBC<br \/>\ndocumentary <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160207030700\/http:\/\/www.onlinemeetingnow.com\/register\/?id=d2db0c7567&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Oprah Effect&#8221;<\/a> which will be broadcast several<br \/>\ntimes on Thursday, May 28. How Oprah Expert Got onto CNBC<br \/>\n===================================<\/p>\n<p>I asked Susan Harrow how she got onto &#8220;The Oprah Effect&#8221; on CNBC<br \/>\n(see previous item).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I assume they Googled me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I rank first for the<br \/>\nkeyword phrase &#8216;how to get onto Oprah.&#8217; And my name comes up at<br \/>\nthe top of the list for other sites that refer to me as an Oprah<br \/>\nexpert.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed it does. And not by accident.<\/p>\n<p>Search engine optimization isn&#8217;t difficult if you know what<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re doing. Make it easy for journalists, freelancers,<br \/>\nbroadcasters and customers to find you by using a checklist of<br \/>\ntips provided by StomperNet, the Internet marketing association.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can get the entire course &#8220;Stomping the Search Engines&#8221;<br \/>\nfor free if you agree to try StomperNet&#8217;s new magazine, The Net<br \/>\nEffect, chock full of tips for Internet marketing, for only a<br \/>\nbuck. Ask the Politicians for Help<br \/>\n========================================<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re starting a publicity campaign, don&#8217;t forget about the<br \/>\npoliticians.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, ask the mayor, governor, county board, those<br \/>\nelected to the statehouse, and anyone elected to national office<br \/>\nto pass a resolution recognizing your event, cause or issue.<\/p>\n<p>Provide something in writing, and let one of their aides do the<br \/>\nrest.<\/p>\n<p>Your event doesn&#8217;t even have to be newsworthy. A local Boy Scout<br \/>\ntroop, for example, could ask the mayor and governor to declare<br \/>\nFebruary 8 Boy Scout Day. Prevent Blindness America could ask a<br \/>\nmember of Congress to declare June &#8220;Fireworks Safety Month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These routine resolutions might result in only a short mention in<br \/>\nyour local newspaper. But but they&#8217;re fairly easy to generate,<br \/>\nand they keep your event in front of your target audience while<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re busy pitching larger feature stories to newspapers and TV.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Janal interviewed me about other tactics for generating<br \/>\npublicity in newspapers, magazines, newsletters and other<br \/>\npublications. &#8220;Get Free Publicity in Print&#8221; is available as a CD<br \/>\nor electronic transcript.<\/p>\n<p>=====================================<br \/>\n5. How to Promote a Roommate Service<br \/>\n=====================================<\/p>\n<p>This week, three Publicity Hounds have tips for Dave Kadavy of<br \/>\nChicago, Ill. Both of those sites target your<br \/>\ndemographic and I&#8217;ve gotten media interest for events that I&#8217;ve<br \/>\nposted for clients there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From Kristen Manieri:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Perhaps if you held your events at stores like American Eagle,<br \/>\nthey could help you get the word out. It&#8217;s a win for them because<br \/>\npeople would come in to shop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Publicity Hound says:<\/p>\n<p>How about experimenting by buying an ad on Facebook?<\/p>\n<p>You can target geographically as well as buy age.
